La fruta del momento: el mangó


¡Llegó el verano! Aunque oficialmente no es hasta el 21 de junio que comienza, el calor en esta Isla del Encanto nos inicia a esta época. Lo que nos pide el cuerpo en estos días es playa, sol, compartir, BBQ… Tomar y comer cosas refrescantes. Y junto con el calor de estos meses, llega la temporada de mangó, protagonista veraniego gracias a sus múltiples usos.

Esta sabrosa y refrescante fruta es nativa de la India. Se introdujo a la Isla en el 1750. Se dice que para los años ‘60 había más de 200 especies de esta fruta en suelo puertorriqueño. Todavía hay varias clases de mangó. Mi favorita, el “mayagüezano”. Por lo menos así lo conozco porque así lo llamaba mi abuela. Es pequeño, amarillo y de consistencia más dura que los demás. Es menos fibroso.

El mangó es rico en agua, además de su alto contenido en vitaminas A y C. También otorga al organismo gran cantidad de antioxidantes.A pesar de ser un fruto muy dulce, se utiliza de formas variadas en la cocina. Sirve para preparar salsas, aderezos, ensaladas, chutney, bizcochos y flanes entre muchas otras opciones.

Para combatir el calor de este verano, les recomiendo preparar un refrescante frappé de mangó. Necesitarán hielo, mangoes, jugo o agua, y azúcar. Se mezclan todos los ingredientes a gusto en la licuadora y ¡listo!
